CONKERS By Pru Heathcote and Ralph Firth

"Conkers" was our autumn production and was directed by Ralph Firth.

The play is set in an old peoples home called The Chestnuts. The people in the home were very colourful charicters with a single mission and that was to save the home from closure.

“CONKERS”

Jennifer (“Don’t call me Matron”) James warmly welcomes you to the Chestnuts, the last council-run retirement home in the county. She’ll introduce you to the “Conkers” – old army pals Jim and Fred, moaning Winnie, doolally Molly, silent Norma and her devoted friend the hard-boiled Irene, and latest inmate Bella, who has a strange obsession with the year 1957. You’ll also meet the staff: care assistants Clare and Lisa, and Yuri, the Russian handyman. You’ll sing along with entertainer Clive, eavesdrop as Jennifer breaks the bad news that stirs the Conkers into action, and cheer on Irene as she outwits local politician, the vodka-swilling Bridget Mailer. And you’ll discover some bitter-sweet secrets from the Conkers’ past lives. But most of all, you’ll learn just what Grey Power can achieve in the face of heartless bureaucracy.

“Conkers” was written in collaboration by Pru Heathcote and Ralph Firth, who wish it to be made known that Pru was responsible for all the sensitive, emotionally-charged bits, and Ralph for all the double-entendres and dubious jokes.

All the action takes place in the lounge of The Chestnuts Retirement Home, set on the outskirts a remote rural village.
